I.356
B-ISDN ATM layer cell transfer performance.

I.363.5
B-ISDN ATM adaptation layer specification: Type 5 AAL.

I.371
Traffic control and congestion control in B-ISDN.

I.371.1
Traffic control and congestion control in B-ISDN: Conformance definitions for ABT and ABR.

I.xxx
ITU I series recommendations - Integrated services digital network (ISDN).

I2C
Inter-IC Bus. A protocol for providing communications links between integrated circuits.

I2S
Inter-IC Sound. A protocol for transmitting digital audio data over a serial connection.

ICL
Incoming Call Logging.

ICSTIS
Independant Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services.

IEEE 802.11a/b
Wireless LAN protocol. Includes provision for data rates of up to 1 Mbits/s and 2 Mbits/s.

IETF
Internet Engineering Task Force (www.ietf.org).

In-band signalling
Control signals embedded in a media stream rather than in a dedicated control channel.

Inductive coupler
Helps people who wear hearing aids with a T switch to hear their caller more clearly.

IS-ISv6
Intermediate System to Intermediate System. An OSI/IP routing protocol, IS-ISv6 is the new version that supports IPv6 addressing. MPLS traffic engineering parameters can be distributed with IS-IS using extensions to the protocol (IS-IS-TE).

Internet
The Mother of all networks. Originally created by the US military back in the early Seventies, and subsequently adopted by academics and the like, the Internet now consists of tens of thousands of extremely powerful interconnected computers and databases that contain, quite literally, a whole world of information.

Internet address
Typically your e-mail address, but can also be the address of your homepage - if you have a website, that is.

ICMPv6
Internet Control Message Protocol v6. An extension to IP that allows for the generation of error messages, test packets, and informational messages related to IP.

IGP
Internet Gateway Protocol. Protocol that distributes routing information to the routers within a network. The term “gateway” is historical; “router” is currently the preferred term. Example IGPs are OSPF, IS-IS and RIP.

InterNIC
Organisation that manages website registration worldwide.

ISATAP
Intra-Site Automatic Tunnel Addressing Protocol. An IPv6 transition mechanism, ISATAP allows IPv6-in- IPv4 tunnels to be created automatically within a site. To obtain address and routing information, each host queries an ISATAP router within the site.

Intrusion
If a called internal subscriber is busy, the caller has the possibility of intruding into the current call if authorised to do so. The caller then has the possibility of talking to that subscriber.

IP
Internet Protocol, enables a packet of data to traverse multiple networks on the way to its final destination.

IP address
32-bit number that uniquely identifies a device on an IP network. IPv6 will introduce 128-bit IP addresses.

IPR
Intellectual Property Rights.

IPsec
A protocol that provides security for transmission of sensitive information over unprotected networks such as the Internet. IPsec acts at the network layer, protecting and authenticating IP packets.

IP Telephony
The use of the IP signalling methods to send voice traffic access or data network. Voice signals are broken down into packets and reassembled at the recovering end. This eliminates the need for seperate voice and data networks by converging all traffic on one network.

IPv4
Internet Protocol Version 4. Currently the most widely implemented version of the internet protocol.

IPv6
Internet Protocol Version 6. Next generation version of the internet protocol. Includes improved address space, quality of service and data security over IPv4.

IR
InfraRed. Invisible band of electromagnetic spectrum commonly used for line-of-site data communications between devices.

IrDA
Infrared Data Association. Standard for wireless infrared data transmission from 115 kbits/s (Serial IR or SIR) up to 4Mbits/s (Fast IR or FIR).

IRRC
Infra-Red Remote Controller.

ISDN
Integrated Services Digital Network. It provides digital connectivity for simultaneous transmission of voice and/or data over multiple communications channels. ISDN is the ideal solution for sending large quantities of data over the telephone network. ISDN functionality enables Direct Dialling In (DDI) and Calling Line Identity (CLI). ISDN is available in 2 formats, Basic Rate and Primary rate. ISDN 30 is a Primary Rate service for the delivery of digital line. ISDN 30 is a 2M bits digital connection between the customers premises equipment (CPE) and the local exchange. Each 2 M bits system provides up to 30 independant 64K bits chanel for speech or data. ISDN 30 is generaly used for voice applications to convert large PABX's to the telephone network. ISDN 2 is a Basic Rate service for the delivery of digital connection between the CPE and the local exchange. Each 144 K bits system provides 2 x 64 K bits chanel for speech or data and a 16 K bits chanel for signalling. ISDN 2 is generally used for data applications.

ISDN card
Card that fits into a slot inside your computer and connects it to a digital line, such as BT's Home Highway service.

ISDN Terminal Adapter
Interface adapter device which provides ISDN connectivity of different equipment types.

ISDN: Integrated Services Digital Network
It provides digital connectivity for simultaneous transmission of voice and/or data over multiple communications channels. ISDN is the ideal solution for sending large quantities of data over the telephone network. ISDN functionality enables Direct Dialling In (DDI) and Calling Line Identity (CLI). ISDN is available in 2 formats, Basic Rate and Primary rate. It is possible to cumulate boxes to get the number of lines you really need. Eg if you want to install 6 lines, you will then need 3 boxes. Over that, we advise you to take the primary rate.

ISDN 30
ISDN 30 is a Primary Rate service for the delivery of digital line. ISDN 30 is a 2M bits digital connection between the customers premises equipment (CPE) and the local exchange.

ITU
International Telecommunication Union (www.itu.org).

ITU-D
International Telecommunication Union - Development Sector.

ITU-R
International Telecommunication Union – Radiocommunication Sector.

ITU-T
International Telecommunication Union - Telecommunication Standardization Sector.

IVR
A single storage, despatch and retrieval system that supports multimedia messages including voice, fax, email and video. It is fully accessible from either a telephone or a PC and provides intelligent message handling.
